SCACE
Synoptic Circum-Antarctic Climate-processes and Ecosystem study
The study is planned to make best use of the unique chance provided by the International Polar Year to synoptically collect in multi-national cooperation data, which reveal the distribution of physical, chemical and biological variables along different longitudes around Antarctica at the same time. The purpose is to build a qualitatively improved data base, which combined with historical data, satellite remote sensing and modeling, makes possible
- to identify jet unknown interactions between physical, chemical and biological processes and to describe known interactions more exactly,
- to document the line of interlinked processes from atmospheric forcing at the surface to sedimentation into the deep sea,
- to develop new proxies for improved reconstruction of the palaeo-environment,
- and to assess the sensitivity of the Southern Ocean system to natural and anthropogenic perturbations as well as the Southern Ocean feedbacks to the global climate.
