CAML (Census of Antarctic Marine Life)
The Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML) will investigate the distribution and abundance of Antarctic marine biodiversity, how it will be affected by climate change and how climate change will affect the ecosystem and the planet.
Dynamic Response of Surface Energy and Mass Balance of Vest- and Austfonna (Nordaustlandet, Svalbard) on Climate Change
The project „Dynamic Response of Surface Energy and Mass Balance of Vest- and Austfonna (Nordaustlandet, Svalbard) on Climate Change“ is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and coordinated with other projects during the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007/2008. The study focuses on the response of arctic glaciers and ice caps on climate change.
Greenland and the European Weather - Improved predictions by modern remote-sensing technology
Scientists of the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics performed airborne observations between Greenland and Svalbard. The results will be finally used to improve current forecasts schemes for high-impact weather events in Europe and, especially, in the Arctic regions.
HOVAG - Holocene Variability in the Arctic Gateway
The study aims at an investigation of climatic developments in the last 10,000 years in the Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean.
NOMAD
The main task was to observe how the synergy of socio-economic plus climate change affects interaction between humans and reindeer.
OITIS
The Operation of Inernational Trade in Iceland and Shetland (ca. 1400-1700).
PAST PERMAFROST
From the beginning of the Pliocene cooling to the modern warming – Past Periglacial Records in Arctic Siberia.
Plates & Gates
The exchange of water masses between the world oceans is of great significance for climate change on the long-run. Plates & Gates is an international research program, which investigates areas of the Arctic and Antarctic that are special relevance for global climate change.
SALE-UNITED - Research at the subglacial lakes of Antarctica
Scientists of the Commission for Glaciology at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich and colleagues of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven investigate the physical and dynamical conditions of the subglacial Lake Vostok in the Antarctic.
SCACE – Circum-Antarctic Climate-processes and Ecosystem study
The objectives of SCACE were to assess the present state of the circum-Antarctic marine ecosystem and to reveal the interplay of processes from atmospheric forcing of the sea surface through water mass properties, currents and transport of nutrients, the build up of biomass by phytoplankton photosynthesis, the dependent higher trophic levels of the food web and eventually to the sedimentation of organic material to the deep sea and the sea floor.
SYSTCO
The Antarctic deep-sea ecosystem is one of the least known places in the world. How do species interact? What impact does the atmosphere have on plants and animals in the ocean? ANDEEP-SYSTCO sheds light into the darkness.
