Moving continents and evolutionary processes in polar regions

In order to reconstruct processes in the polar regions at high spatial and temporal resolution, many parameters and components, spanning various scientific disciplines, must be networked into the models. This will enable scientists to work the interacting subsystems of atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and biosphere into a universal picture.

The Polar Year 2007/08 will stimulate interdisciplinary and multinational research in the polar regions - the climate kitchens of the Earth.

The research projects within this framework include:

  • Investigation of polar oceanic connections developing through tectonics
  • Reconstruction of bottom topographies of polar oceans and their impact on ocean currents and sea levels
  • Investigation of energy and material exchange through polar oceanic linkages.
  • Reconstruction of the emergence of biological species as a result of changes to polar oceanic linkages
  • Analysis of biological diversity from the shelf into the polar deep sea in view of past and present global changes
